A New Hampshire Hearthside Dinner
A hearthside dinner at the Remick Country Doctor Museum & Farm in Tamworth, NH leaves one full of delicious local foods cooked “the old fashioned way”, in addition to the wonderful (and exhausting!) feeling of satisfaction after having prepared and served the meal from scratch!
A few of us at Art in the Age were lucky enough to take part in a traditional 19th Century Hearthside Dinner, presented by the Remick Country Doctor Museum & Farm. The meal was cooked in an open hearth, using fire, coals, and cast iron pots. We churned butter, whipped cream, baked potatoes, and made the most amazing bread pudding we have ever had…topped off with a little ROOT, of course!
The Menu:
Bread Pudding Recipe (Historic recipe researched and transcribed by Remick Museum Staff):
- 3 cups bread
- 2 cups milk
- 2 eggs
- 1 teaspoon vanilla
- 1/2 teaspon cinnamon or nutmeg
- 1/2 cup brown sugar
Break bread in small pieces and put in greased baking pan. Spread sugar over bread. Combine remaining ingredients and pour over bread. Spread raisins and/or nuts on top if desired. Bake in medium (350 degree F) oven.
To add the perfect compliment, drizzle some ROOT over the bread pudding once served, then add a dollop of whipped cream.
