A ROOT Cocktail Champion is Crowned!
After a grueling hours-long battle under the stars at Silk City’s outdoor garden last night, a sole ROOT Cocktail Champion finally emerged: Kate Loeb from the recently reopened Oyster House.
Judges George Costa (bartender and general manager of Southwark), Arthur Etchells (editor of FooBooz), Victor Fiorillo (Philadelphia Magazine), and Marnie Old (world renowned sommelier) looked on as Ms. Loeb fought off thirteen worthy mixological adversaries from such Philly hotspots at N. 3rd, PYT, and Apothecary. She left not only with bragging rights and the ROOT Cocktail title, but also with a $400 AITA gift certificate and one of Silk City’s own garden gnomes.
Two runners-up also left with coveted garden gnomes. Stephen Siebert from Village Whiskey took home second place with “The Home Team,” and Andres Sanchez from Positano Coast took third with the “Black Mamba.”
And now, without any further ado, Ms. Loeb’s winning cocktail:
Dr. Hadley’s Root Restorative
.5oz Demerara simple syrup
6 large mint leaves
1.25 oz. Lairds Bonded (100 proof) Applejack
1.0 oz Root Liqueur
.5 oz. Benedictine
.5 oz. fresh lime juice
2 dashes Fee Brother’s Aztec Chocolate Bitters
2 dashes Angostura Bitters
Garnish: Mint sprig
Muddle mint in simple syrup. Add ice and other ingredients. Shake vigorously and strain into a cocktail glass. Top with a spanked mint sprig.
