A Week of Farm Firsts: Zucchini, Compost Heaps, and Pigs
This is a week of firsts. I think my farming cherry (tomato) has been officially popped.
The squash I planted outside my kitchen door, after a long hard, fruitless and rainy summer, budded forth with its first fruit! I have never been prouder in my life. I showed my neighbors and sent photos to my mom. One of the single most rewarding moments in life is seeing food that you planted yourself ACTUALLY GROWING!!!
(size comparison)
My kitchen composter was finally full and finally ready. First, I opened the bottom drain and collected the compost tea. Mixed with water in a 1:10 ratio, this is a great organic fertilizer. It smelled like rat feces, but I gave it a go. Things are looking greener, methinks. Chai was very interested in this process.
The collected compost tea.
My nascent compost heap in a spot on the side of my yard near the woods that gets sun in the morning and shade in the afternoon. Digging a small hole.
The fermented compost!
The buried fermented compost! All in a hard morning’s work. Next Spring, my garden soil will thank me.
And one last first (haha)…
This past Sunday, I helped some friends out with house-sitting a farm in town that had chickens, hens, and PIGS! I don’t know if I’ve ever seen a pig in real life before that moment. They are pretty cute…in that filthy, squealing, gobbling sort of way. We fed all of the animals and collected eggs. It was incredibly fun. We cooked scrambled farm-fresh eggs and drank raw milk for dinner. I’ve never laughed so hard.
I think farm life might really be for me after all.
