Art in the NO AGE of Mechanical Reproduction: Philly Show Review & Photos

This morning I thought I had been beaten with a baseball bat.

Then I remembered: I was pummeled against a speaker for a few hours, almost lost a camera to an onslaught of stage divers, and passed out asleep at some point with my ears ringing, covered in a gristly patina of strangers’ sweat…

Oh yeah! NO AGE happened last night at the First Unitarian Church in Philadelphia!

Hot damn. I have yet to recover my hearing. I am the happiest person alive.

Art in the Age’s favorite LA punk-stars, NO AGE, kept the temperature in the church basement well above boiling for possibly the most high-energy set I have witnessed in the past year.

…and then the indefatigable duo delivered a two song encore to a riled, raucous, and downright celebratory crowd.

The recent successful release of their latest album, Nouns, from Sub Pop Records in early May, clinched this show as a definite “must-see” for the Philly crowd. Randy and Dean did not disappoint.

The following compound adjectives are appropriate to describe the evening:

Teeth-clenching
Bone-rattling
First-pumping
Body-flailing

The vibes from both the crowd and from Randy and Dean themselves were stellar. You could forget for a sweet second that you were in a tiny venue, packed to the hilt in the throes of summer.

Not kidding about the volume of sweat (see above and below).

An awesome variation on previous live shows was when drummer Dean Spunt spent some time, mid-set, wailing on the guitar while a friend took over drums.

NO AGE continues to uproot the foothold of this electronic, laptop-driven age with catchy records that translate into one hell of a live performance.
