AULD LANG SPACE 1026? Vaudevillains New Year’s Brigade 2008!!!

“DIY Mumming for the 21st Century,” reads the MySpace page for Vaudevillains New Year’s Brigade.

Quick Rundown for Out-of-Towners:
Every New Year’s Day, brigades of what are historically and affectionately termed “Mummers” strut down Broad Street, Philly’s Avenue of the Arts, bedecked and bedazzled in sequined and feathered costumes with matching floats. String bands play. Your drunk uncle from South Philly dances in a pink tutu down the middle of the street with all his buddies from your family’s particular Mummer Brigade. This performance is called Mumming. And this is the Philadelphia Mummer’s Parade.

Think this sounds utterly absurd? You’ve got a few hundred years of tradition to contend with.

So the members of art collective Space 1026 and friends formed their own brigade, the Vaudevillains. They host Sew-A-Thons and dance move practices for months leading up to the parade. Did it pay off? Decide for yourself.

Presenting…
