Autumn in New Hampshire: Mulled ROOT Cider

The AITA farm has been creating many adventures for Robin - who bravely moved to (wo)man the land. Farming, fixing, building and working all day will surely make one thirsty after a long day. Robin has crafted up several amazing ROOT recipes.  Here is one more to add to the collection.

Mulled ROOT Cider

To come up with this recipe. I had the incredible fortune of having fresh apple cider on hand, straight from an orchard in Peterborough, NH, pressed by hand by yours truly and two good friends.

However, a jug of cider from the local farmstand/orchard/organic grocery store will also do just fine! This spicy concoction will warm you head-to-toe after a long day of running around outdoors. The flavor improves when shared with good friends…
Cheers!

The Cider
1/2 gallon freshly pressed apple cider
1/2 tsp ground cloves
1/2 tsp nutmeg
1/2 tsp allspice
3-4 cinnamon sticks
3-4 slices fresh ginger root
1/2 tsp lemon zest

Combine all ingredients in large metal saucepan.
Heat on low over the course of a chilly fall evening, stirring occasionally.

The Booze

1 oz. ROOT
1 oz. Vodka (I am currently in love with Flag Hill Distillery’s General John Stark Vodka, made from apples grown in Concord, NH)

Ladle a healthy portion (4-6 oz.) of hot mulled cider over the ROOT and vodka mixture in your favorite, thick-walled mug.
Sip slowly with old and new friends, preferably around a toasty fire or woodstove.
When the point of drunkenness is reached, fling the door open and race headfirst into the nearest pile of leaves.

Repeat.
