Cai Guo-Qiang at FWM & Philadelphia Museum of Art!
Friday, December 11th, renowned contemporary multi-media artist, Cai Guo-Qiang conducted two back to back performance-based artworks in conjunction with the Philadelphia Museum of Art and the Fabric Workshop and Museum. Fallen Blossoms: Explosion Project, a site-specific explosion took place in front of the museum ignited at sunset (4:00pm) to celebrate the Museum’s late director, Anne d’Harnoncourt. To see video documentation of this event, go here!
Time Scroll and Time Flies like a Weaving Shuttle consequently took place at the Fabric Workshop and Museum; both artworks served to “gracefully address time’s passage and the role memory and memorials play in attending to the past”. Due to overcrowding and restricted documentation, photographs were not allowed at the FWM, however, the first-hand account of the beautiful remnants of silk originally stenciled with gunpowder ( inspired by a narrative in the life of Anne d’Harnoncourt) were inspiring in their details. Miao tribe weavers from the Xiangxi region of Hunan province, China will take residence at the FWM for three months, so it’s not too late to see the weavings in progress!
