Canning Workshop with Beth Brandon, June 21 at Preston’s Paradise!
The ability to purchase fresh food at outdoor farmer’s markets on a daily basis are a privilege residents in California can relate to, however those of us on the east coast region need to hustle to keep our food fresh during the off-seasons.
Canning is a process invented by Nicolas Appert in 1809 when the French newspaper, Le Monde, prompted by the government, to challenge anyone to devise a cost-effective way of preserving large amounts of food. Today, it’s a useful way of extending the shelf life of most acidic food with a ph lower than 4.6, such as pickled vegetables and fruit. A hungry stomach + food + mason jars + the invention of boiling = endless possibilities…..
Join artist, Beth Brandon as she facilitate a workshop on home canning June 21, noon to 5pm. Those wishing to attend are recommended to bring their own canning materials and email info@prestonsparadise.org to register.
Preston’s Paradise, a neighborhood collective that promotes small scale food production and sustainable technology, states its primary goals as, “to redirect information and energy towards the enactment of community projects that benefit the neighborhood and the larger environment”. Canning is one of many workshops to take place this summer in addition to the following:
- hosting a bi-weekly farmer’s market
- organizing weekly trash clean-ups, facilitate mural painting projects and graffiti removal
- suppling vegetable and flower starts to neighborhood green spaces
- coordinating 3 community garden sites, and
- hosting workshops in approachable technology and self-sufficiency
