Celebrate Philly Beer Week at AITA – The Roots of Root Beer
The Roots of Root Beer
June 4-27, 2010
Opening: Friday, June 4th, 6-8pm
Art in the Age is pleased to announce the opening of its June exhibition, The Roots of Root Beer, featuring a documented history on the classic American beverage and an installation of Hires Root Beer artifacts courtesy of Franklin Fountain.
Long before Coca Cola, root fermentation was a traditional method in brewing medicinal beverages. Early colonial settlers used ingredients such as sarsaparilla, dandelion root, burdock, spikenard, juniper berries and sassafras in absence of grain crops to make low-alcohol, or “small” beers. The Industrial Revolution made it possible for carbonation, bottling and preservation of beers. However, it was during the Temperance Movement in which a Philadelphian pharmacist by the name of Charles Hires introduced root beer extract for mass consumption at the 1876 Philadelphia Centennial Exposition.
In celebration of Philly Beer month, we invite you to experience our inspiration behind the local history of ROOT, or as it was known back then, Root Tea.
