Chicken Update: Terror In The Night!
We returned to the farm a recent evening to discover that some New Hampshire megafauna – coyotes, bears, foxes – had pilfered from our chicken coop. Where once there were numerous Wyandottes and Black Astralorps and White Plymouth rocks we found only feathers tangled violently in the tall grasses (I need to mow tomorrow). Later, our two remaining laying hens emerged with hesitation from the edge of the woods and their relentless squeaking evinced obvious distress and lingering trauma.
The next day we watched a coyote saunter across the fields – a likely suspect? I chased it with the tractor, but it disappeared into the forest before I could catch it (it is not clear, however, what measures I would take had I gotten close enough).
We have since refilled the coop with a neighbor’s extra layers, and moved it closer to our house. Humans and chickens alike are sleeping with an eye open.
