EARTH DAY 1970: A Question of Survival, EARTH DAY 2010: A Question of Sustainability
This planet is threatened with destruction and we who live in it with death. The heavens reek. The waters below are foul. Children die in infancy. And we and the world which is our home, live on the brink of nuclear annihilation. We are in a crisis of survival…
So begins the the first national coverage of Earth Day/Week in 1970, broadcast on Philadelphia’s CBS News, hosted by correspondent Walter Cronkite. So much doom, so much gloom, so much glistening hair slicked into side parts!
Today, on The Official Earth Day 2010 site, citizens and readers are asked to take pledges to action. To think globally and act locally…turn off lights when you leave a room, bike instead of drive, recycle plastic bottles, buy local produce, and reuse water bottles (to name a few). Is our world on THE BRINK OF ANNIHILATION? Or must we all WISE UP, WAKE UP, and STAND UP in our own homes and in our towns to drive large-scale change, starting on the individual level?
