Famous Happenings in New Hampshire
I’ve been consuming reading material on the history of Tamworth, NH with the same ferocity that I approached an ice cream sundae earlier this evening…
In the case of the reading, my brain is bloated with knowledge and excitement, because my new town is totally famous!!! Regarding my post-whipped cream bodily state: no comment.
Here are my two favorite Famous Tamworth Tidbits:
1. President Grover Cleveland had a summer house in Tamworth and, with his wife Alice, started The Barnstormers Theater in 1931 – the longest running summer playhouse in New England. Holler at your oft-overlooked commander-in-chief of yore! A super dapper Tamworth summer person. There’s even a hill and a road named after him.
2. Chinook Sled Dogs were originally bred in Tamworth in the early 1900s by Arthur Walden, an author, explorer, and Tamworth gentleman. “Chinook,” the name of the first of his breed, was a cross between a Mastiff type dog with a Husky. Chinooks bred in Tamworth comprised Richard E. Byrd’s Antarctic Expedition team in the 1920′s. Chinooks are still bred for their size, endurance, and obedience. As of June 9, they were named the official State Dog of New Hampshire!
