Farm Graveyard Secrets - Unearthed!
I will concede that this is a bit late for Halloween or Día de los Muertos…However, this spooky history tidbit is, nonetheless, intriguing!
A locally published tome “If Walls Could Speak,” led me to believe that the cemetery opposite my house was occupied by members of the Moulton Family (founders of the nearby town, Moultonborough). I had originally thought that perhaps this was a “placeholder” graveyard, a false family burial ground with no actual bodies, used to secure land rights via British Royal Charter in the 1700s.
Auspicious circumstances led me to the Cook Memorial Library, where I was turned on to a basement floor of Tamworth history reference materials. What a gold mine! As I silently and solemnly promised myself to return and spend more time perusing the shelves of scrapbooks and archived publications, I stumbled upon a listing of cemeteries…
Lo and behold! There was a leaf for the Great Hill Cemetery. A single, yellowed, type-written sheet listed the names and ages of the men, women, and primarily (sadly) children and babies, buried beneath the uninscribed stones. Members of the Moulton Family (as I had suspected) and The Bickford Family lie in rest across the path from my house.
We now know that the old plaque affixed to the boulder in the graveyard is not entirely true…
