FARMERS MARKET FINDS: Mint Tea and Mini Shoofly Pie!

While we can’t all be as fortunate as Robin, all hope is not lost. We can still enjoy farm-fresh veggies, even in the city. It’s still open-air market season after all!

Sidenote: Did you know that Market St was originally called High St? It was later renamed in recognition of the countless open-air markets that lined the street for miles.

Now, 140 years after the city banned markets from Market St (no joke–the ban went into effect within a year of the official renaming), it seems that for every corner you turn in food-loving Philly, you’re bound to come across a little tucked-away farm stand. Why, just last Thursday I was going for a lunchtime constitutional down Chestnut St when I stumbled upon one such market between 8th and 9th Street.

The hours of operation are pretty limited–10 to 3:30 on Thursdays only–but it’s definitely worth stopping by to pick up a personal sized shoofly pie and an ice cold mint tea. They also have a wonderful selection of fresh produce, jams, and vinegars.

Check out some pictures below, and maybe I’ll see you out there next Thursday!
