Featured Recipe: ROOT Julep
A recent suggestion sent by one of our favorite fans* was this tasty drink. A ROOT Julep. Easy to make – just substitute the rye with ROOT and voilà! a refreshing minty beverage.
The julep is generally associated with Southern cuisines, has many variations and is the signature drink at the Kentucky Derby. This started in 1938 when they started serving mint juleps in souvenir glasses. Some historians say the recipe was born in the 1700′s somewhere on the east coast of the US. A julep was a morning drink equivalent to coffee in some societies “One sip and Pow! The farmers were ready to face the long day.”
Your preferred Mint Julep recipe will do, but here is one that works just fine:
3 sprigs fresh mint
1 teaspoon water
1 teaspoon superfine sugar
2 ounces bourbon ROOT
- Muddle 2 mint sprigs, the water, and the sugar in a highball or collins glass or a silver julep cup.
- Fill the glass with crushed ice, and pour in the
bourbonROOT. - Garnish with the remaining mint sprig.
