Find The Farmer: A Large Step for American-Kind
A recent NY Times article brought a very awesome resource to my attention…
The idea of “traceability” is a hot topic in foodie, consumer culture, and now political spheres! Josh Durf, the owner of Stone-Buhr Flour in San Francisco totally gets it. Stone-buhr flour is hand-milled in small batches and certified “sustainable” by Food Alliance. Stone-Buhr has created FINDTHEFARMER.com so consumers can find exactly where the wheat came from that is in their package of flour! All you do is enter the lot number of your flour. You are then provided with a list of farmers who have contributed wheat to that lot. FINDTHEFARMER.com, is full of info about the farm it was grown on and provides a bio of the farmer who tills those fields, complete with photos and video interviews!

The Find The Farmer Blog has more great news on traceability practices and farmer-consumer-relations. Keep your eye on initiatives such as this one…members of Congress want to add a clause on traceability to the proposed FDA Globalization Act of 2009. This would be a large step for American-kind…in the right direction! Enough already with being known for our Golden Arches! How about for our progressive consumer knowledge policies? Ahhh…much better!
