Happy Birthday, Ralph Waldo Emerson!
On this day (May 25) in 1803, the essayist, philosopher, and poet Ralph Waldo Emerson was born in Boston, Massachusetts. Today we know him as on of the “Founding Fathers” of the American Transcendentalist Movement.
After a Harvard education and travels through Europe, Emerson returned to Massachusetts, where he befriended Henry David Thoreau. The two, along with other intellectuals, founded The Transcendental Club in September of 1836. The group members championed the development of a school of thought and literary oeuvre that was uniquely American.
Emerson published his first essay, Nature, in September 1836. He served as editor of The Dial, the Transcendentalist’s newspaper and political magazine, published from 1840-1844. Emerson came to be known as “The Concord Sage”, and lectured throughout New England until his death in 1882.
