This Beating Heart Acts As A Timer April 6-May 19, 2007
The word "Hush" which was found, painted, in several separate places in Jim Houser's installation at Painted Bride, seemed very appropriate. Houser has constructed a perfectly-ordered world of pleasantly colored monsters, weapons, and still-life. You feel as thought nothing will hurt you so long as you stay reasonably quiet.
Lately, I have had a hard time processing the nostalgic and almost childish imagery of this sort of art, and have often wondered if my generation has a supreme fear of growing up. Almost in spite of myself and my personal prejudices, I was in awe of the complete and controlled vision of Houser's work and utterly charmed by the attention given to the smallest detail.
While visiting Timer I ran into Shelly Spector, who launched the now defunct SPECTOR Gallery in 1999 with a solo show of Jim's work. Shelly also organized This beating Heart Acts As A Timer, view one of her current projects ArtJaw.
