In the 1960s and 70s, thousands of young people interested in social change gave birth to the American survival movement. They advocated going “back to the land,” building a new economy based upon subsistence living, and standardizing the barter system as a means of exchange. Fifty years later, it’s clear that their efforts did not succeed as intended. However, the evidence is all around us to show that the ideas inherent in the survival movement have had a profound influence on the way a new generation of young people is creating products, building businesses, and forming communities.
Join Tom Brown III, lifelong survivalist and son of the legendary Tom Brown, Jr., as he weaves a narrative of this progression and celebrates the positive change that has flowered from 1960s idealism. From the iPad to Twitter to ROOT, Tom lends a perspective from inside the survival movement as to why we can feel proud of what our generation as wrought – and why we need to do more. Tom will also be on hand to demonstrate primitive skills and describe the medicinal properties of the components of ROOT.
