Lift The Bake Sale Ban!
After a year of gloomy bake sales and fund-raisers, bakers are on their way to passing a bill to lift the ban on home-baked goods. It’s hard to imagine that selling a homemade pie at a church bake sale would be breaking the law, but in early 2009, state food inspectors deemed it illegal to sell food prepared in a non-state-inspected kitchen at a state-licensed facility. The ban has had a crushing effect on nonprofit groups that depended on these fund-raisers for survival. Now thanks to a year of lobbying by angry bakers, the General Assembly finally passed what has come to be known as “the pie bill” to restore the tradition of bake sales at churches, fire halls, and other civic spaces. The state Department of Agriculture also supports the bill with a few modifications, such as notifying consumers that the baked goods are made at someone’s home. The ban will hopefully be lifted within the year, and bake sales will once again be a source of delicious homemade treats!
