POINT OF VIEW: The Art Gallery/Retail Space Ain’t Nothin’ New!

Yesterday, an article in The New York Times, “All Dressed Up Like Art Galleries,” highlighted several high-end boutiques in Chicago, NYC, and LA that had stumbled upon quite an innovation:

mounting the works of emerging artists to fill space once reserved for fashion labels…and to pique the interest of…worldly clientele.”

merchants across the country…have transformed their boutiques into one-stop emporiums offering gladiator sandals alongside rare lithographs and vivid oils on canvas…As the galleries that once embraced them succumb to soaring overheads and declining sales, some have taken to exhibiting in restaurants and hotel and condo lobbies. Even more are seeking refuge in the fashion world.

As a functioning group and space comprised of artists, designers, intellectuals, and fashion folk from all walks of life, Art In The Age declines throwing our collective hat into the ring brought to light by Ruth La Ferla. The shattering of the traditional gallery space and the practice of collaborative economic practices with artists are the tenets we have always practiced and were, in fact, founded upon!

- We do not fall into the category of super-luxe boutiques that have decided, as of late, to embrace practicing artists as a means to stay afloat in a drowning economy.

- We have always believed in the value of art in all things and actively supported those making it, through good and bad, thick and thin.

- We take this idea one step further, and create accessible, affordable clothing with works of art designed specifically for apparel. Works of art are not additional points of interest, but the tangible bastions of our retail offerings.

- We understand that lending a hand to artists is a two way street, and we proudly walk it. We need our artists as much as they need us. The traditional gallery system is, indeed, fickle. And never more so than in this mercurial economic state. But Art In The Age is not a fashion refuge for struggling artists. We’re a living room, a watering hole, a dinner party for dear friends with their own ideas and their own lifestyles in which we seek inspiration and celebrate with our products and exhibitions.

- We are jacks of all trades and masters of our craft. Artists, curators, shopkeepers, printers… All of us who work with and for Art In The Age are all of these things, in and out of our array of day jobs.

For boutique owners in the high fashion world, just now discovering the benefits and satisfaction that comes from partnering with local artists…kudos to them.

So to set the record straight: It Ain’t Nothin’ New!
