The Tamworth Sleep Commandments

One of the most ostensible life changes that I have experienced in my short two weeks of rural living is what I affectionately nominate, The Tamworth Sleep Commandments.

Here are the stipulations of this New World Order:

- Thou shalt rise by 6 am.

- Thou shalt be Bright Eyed and Bushy-Tailed by 7 am.

- Thou shalt be prepared to receive phone calls to your landline by 7 am.

- Thou shalt not whine, complain, bitch, moan, or any active verb of the sort.

- Thou shalt not discuss how much coffee one has consumed in order to become Bright of Eye and Bushy of Tail.

- Honor thy lunch hour, lest thy neighbor become cranky of disposition.

- Henceforth, 4 pm is “quitting time.”

- All the children shall be in bed by 9 pm

- All the citizens shall be dreaming by 9:30 pm.

The Tamworth Sleep Commandments cannot be denied, and are slowly breaking me of my “City Girl” habits. I was up and running this morning at 6:30 am, and have made a ritual of sitting in the hay barn, facing east, as the sun comes up after I’ve “done the rounds” of checking on all the buildings and fields.
