The Weekend Event Sprawl
It's summertime, and Philly livin' is easy. Which means that it's high time for me to get out in the fresh air! This weekend, beginning with First Friday Gallery Openings, I'm challenging myself to make it out to every art opening/festival and local music jam that I have been "penciling in" and promising myself (and others!) to attend. Here is a proposed schedule of art/music haps:
Curated by Roberta Fallon and Libby Rosof, ID will feature up-and-coming Philadelphia artists who have recently graduated from area colleges and programs. The work of this group of young artists deals with personal experience in a world of modern technology and iconography.
The opening reception is tonight from 5-8 p.m at Projects Gallery. There will be a performance of artist Samantha Hill's "Black Iconography" at 7 pm.
Projects Gallery is located at 629 N 2nd Street. Summer gallery hours are Thursday and Friday 4-7 pm and Saturday noon-7 pm. ID runs until July 26.
Vox Populi Gallery presents SOLID GOLD, its 4th Annual Juried Exhibition. 24 artists from across the nations were selected from over 250 applicants by Adelina Vlas, Assistant Curator for Modern and Contemporary Art at the Philadelphia Museum of Art, and Sarah McEneaney, Artist. The opening reception is tonight from 6-11 pm.
SOLID GOLD features work by: D. B. Stovall, Mike Smith, Daniel Payavis, Serena Perrone, Corrie Tice, Cara Erskine, Robert Goodman, Emily Denlinger, Nathan Prouty, Amy Lincoln, Rachel Frank, Jonathan Schoff, William Lohre, R. Nick Barbee. Mark Klassen, Daniel Gerwin, Hannah Smith Allen, Abby Donovan, Lee Arnold, Bang-Geul Han, Pamela Sunstrum, Edward Carey, Samuel Ekwurtzel, and Zach Rockhill.
Vox Populi Gallery is located at 319 North 11th Street, 3rd Floor. Gallery hours are Wednesday-Sunday from 12-6 pm. The show will run until June 26.
Tonight from 6-10 pm, Space 1026 presents Orbital Debris, a new show of drawings by Brooke Inman and Leah Beeferman. Brooke and Leah's work deal with mapping and deciphering the complexities of personal and general universes.
Check out the Space 1026 blog for a sneak peek!
Space 1026 is located at 1026 Arch Street. The show will run until June 28.
This Saturday, starting at 1 pm, West Philadelphia's Clark Park will be transformed into a Local Music Mecca! Philly-based bands will perform on a stage in the middle of the park and in the grass. This year's lineup includes: L'Ananas, Drums Like Machine Guns, Soft People, Serpents of Wisdom, Crestmont Steppers, BEATJAMS, Club Lifestyle, Vice Versa, Citywide Specials, Kurt Vile, Stinking Lizaveta, The Chimeras, and The Extraordinaires. I am particularly excited for Soft People and The Extraordinaires.
For more info and set times, check out the Best Fest MySpace.
Clark Park is located at 43rd and Baltimore Avenue.
I first saw Kurt Halsey's achingly adorable, achingly self-aware mini-portraits of people and animals about 4 years ago, and totally related to the endearing, dejected little creatures. I've managed to miss every show he's had in Philly since then. But this time, I plan to be there to see his new work.
The exhibition will be at Art Star Boutique & Gallery this Saturday from 5-9 pm.
Art Star Boutique & Gallery is located at 623 North 2nd Street. The show will run until July 13.
I recently discovered that right in my neighborhood, an annual weekend-long festival is about to take place. ODUNDE, one of "Philadelphia's brightest cultural jewels" means "Happy New Year." The word ODUNDE originates with the Yoruba people of Nigeria, West Africa. The ODUNDE festival is one of celebration. It begins with a procession to the Schuylkill River. There, offerings of fruits and flowers are made to Oshun, the Goddess of the River. This year's procession will be from noon–1:30 pm, leaving from 23rd & South Street.
The ODUNDE Festival, held in the same location, will feature performances and artisan work, including: African dance, hair braiding, stepping, roller dance, drill team formations, hip-hop and tap dance, traditional African instruments, drumming, and rhythm and blues. Over 40 craft artists will be displaying and selling wares.

Well, well, Philadelphia! I accept your Arts & Music Challenge this weekend, and will faithfully report back, fully enculturated on Monday!
