My personalized Google Ad today was a link to Marcel Duchamp. But Google was not referring to The Man, The Myth, or The Legend. This link was to The Duchamp Hotel and Winery in Sonoma County, CA.
Touted as a luxury hotel comprised of of six contemporary villas accompanied by a "visionary" vineyard, Sonoma County Duchampland appears to be a postmodern paradise. But is this elitist estate just a perverse misappropriation of poor dead Marcel and his epic ready-mades (used as icons for the website navigation)? The artwork chosen as the vineyard's logo is not Duchamp-ian in the least, but represents Slaughterhouse, an on-site performance art space.
If you find yourself up for this weekend getaway, I would suggest packing light. You know, minimalist style. And a word of advice for the menfolk: The fountains are not urinals.
