‘Tis Country Fair Season!

The maple trees are blushing red everywhere you look. Mornings and evenings are chilly and crisp. And so we celebrate the advent of autumn in New England with warm mulled cider after dinner, long hikes with no more bugs, and a long line-up of traditional country fairs!

A view of Mount Chocorua, which I fully intend to climb ASAP.

I’ve never been to a “real” rural fair, so I approach the next three weeks with eagerness and interest. Here’s the lineup…

THIS WEEKEND: The MOFGA (Maine Organic Farmers and Gardeners Association) Common Ground Fair in Unity, Maine. (fairly new, started in 1976)

Workshops, demonstrations, exhibitions, and lectures on organic farming, gardening, livestock management, permaculture, and sustainable building. I will be learning some new skills, kicking up my heels a bit, and volunteering to cook at the Common Kitchen!

THE NEXT WEEKEND: The Fryebrug Fair in Maine (started in 1851 as a community exhibition day)

Livestock games and exhibitions, agricultural contests, and Woodsmen’s Day Lumberjack Games!

THE WEEKEND AFTER THAT: The Sandwich Fair in Center Sandwich, New Hampshire (started in 1886 as a cattle trade for local farmers)

Right down the road in the eclectic town of Sandwich. Rides and games for the whole family, tractor pulls, 4-H Shows, and local crafts. It’s been a long time since I last rode a ferris wheel. Can’t wait.

I plan to attend Common Ground and The Sandwich Fair. Full reports to be expected from each!
