Olden Days Are Here Again: Woodstove 101

Over the past two weeks, temperatures have dropped well into the 30′s at night! Luckily, I have welcomed a new tenant into my home…a refurbished Vermont Castings “Vigilant” Woodstove!

She’s a beauty, and keeps the whole kitchen and living room warm on chilly nights and mornings! I get to keep my thermostat down and conserve oil, too! Welcome back, “olden days”!

What I’ve Learned So far:

1. Burn paper/cardboard to build up some ash in the bottom on the stove. (Protects the iron plates from direct flame.)

2. Build a fire slowly, as you do a campfire.

3. Keep the damper (panel in the top that tilts up and down) open while building the fire.

4. Once fire is roaring, shut the damper. Smoke will escape out a vent in the BOTTOM of the stove.

5. Let her roll! Operating temp is about 500-600 degrees! Hot damn!

My delivery of 2-yr-old dry pine. Mmmm…toasty!
(To be stacked indoors later today…)
