Peg and Awl Bags Are Built to Last
Carryalls Worth Strapping On

If there’s ever been a pair to take the something old, something new adage to heart, it’s husband-and-wife team Margaux and Walter Kent.

When not hammering away in their Fishtown workshop, they’re ransacking flea markets for materials for their new line of sturdy waxed-canvas bags.

Stash your makeup, paintbrushes, or subway tokens in the zippered pouch. Adjustable straps are made of early 1900s rifle slings (some still bear the soldier’s name). Fabric from old mattresses, aprons, and dresses is stitched above interior pockets, and tiny tags are sliced from antique saddles.

With a nod to modern times, the Kents cut the bags so your laptop nestles in cozily and lip balms and pens stay within reach.

We foresee a match made in heaven.

Art in the Age of Mechanical Reproduction, 116 North Third Street (215-922-2600 or artintheage.com); online at etsy.com, $38-$190.

The Age of Mechanical Reproduction Fishing Exhibit

My friend Ron P. Swegman, noted fly angling writer and author of the great book Small Fry: The Lure of the Little, recently was invited to participate in the recent The Age of Mechanical Reproduction in Philadelphia on October 7th, 2011.

Ron write: “It was a big success based on the healthy turnout. The curator, Daniel Abraham, was well pleased. The venue features quality heritage brand merchandise that conveys an early twentieth century look and feel. My rustic fly fishing equipment and artwork fit right in. Here attached are four snapshots from the opening reception.”

Looks like it was a big success! Congrats to ron on the nifty display. If you’re in Philadelphia stop by and check it out!

Art in the Age of Mechanical Reproduction Logo T-Shirt

Over the past few weeks I’ve gotten really into Art in the Age of Mechanical Reproduction (often shortened to Art in the Age). I’ve featured them in the past, but I never realized they were located in Philadelphia and have a flagship retail store here (which I will be going to soon). They just do a ton of cool stuff, my favorite being their crazy awesome organic and historical liqueurs (a  big part of my birthday present to myself). I bought Root, and Snap, which are both incredibly delicious. They also have a third, Rhuby, which was unfortunately sold out when I went to the liquor store. The two that I got are amazing though, and I think they’re fairly well distributed at this point, so you have a chance of finding it in your area. I heartily recommend that you check out the descriptions for all of them–they are indeed as delicious as they sound (if not more…).

Anyway, I chose to feature there very cool logo t-shirt today, and will be blogging about a bunch of their other tees in the near future. Maybe I’ll even try to get some pictures of the tees in their native Old City flagship store environment. I really do love the logo–it feels very Illuminati’ish (in a cool way). It looks simple and clean on the tee, which is just the way I like it. Plus, when people ask you about it, you can tell them about this awesome group called Art in the Age.

I think it’s time to stop rambling about my fan’dom for Art in the Age. But…you can pick this tee up for $28.00 at their online store, and you should also definitely check out all the liqueurs. You will not regret it. They cost about $33 each for a very sharp looking 750 ml bottle and are worth every penny.

Philly, Without the Cheese

No, Philadelphia has not suddenly turned into Miami. But between the town’s two raddest neighborhoods – Old City and Northern Liberties – you’ll find stores that get it right, kick-ass BYO restaurants, and bars that care more about local craft beers than the Eagles game. Call it Philly’s awakening.

Philly has the rep as the capital of eighth-grade field trips and binge-drinking b-school bros doing their best Situation impressions, but this place has bigger ambitions if you know where to look. You’ll find all the buzzy trappings of Brooklyn – pitch-perfect menswear shops in Old City, straight-shooting restaurants and microbrew-soaked nightlife in Northern Liberties – without all the Brooklyn smugness. Here’s how to navigate the new Philly revolution.

Hit this hipster general store for rotating art exhibitions on exposed brick walls, clothes fit for a weekend at your cabin in the Poconos, and signature ROOT liquor – a spicy, boozy concoction that all the locals keep in their flasks. 116 N. 3rd St.
