This flag, otherwise known as the “Gadsden Flag“, was designed by Christopher Gadsden, an American statesman and army general.  However, the earliest known documentation of this flag was its use by Philadelphia Marines, the first ones enlisted by the US Marines as ordered by the Second Continental Congress for a mission to intercept British ships in 1775.
