Energy Bill to Appear in Senate on Wednesday
In a month of climatic catastrophes and corresponding legislative travesties it is quite surprising that little attention has been paid to a significant and controversial energy bill, introduced into the Senate last week by senators John Kerry and Joseph Lieberman. Their 987-page Senate bill proposes to limit climate-altering emissions, reduce oil imports, and create millions of new energy-related jobs. Overall, the bill aims to reduce green-house gas emissions by 17 percent in the next 10 years, and by 83 percent by 2050. The particular novelty of the Kerry-Lieberman proposal is that addresses separately each industry of the energy sector, and thereby avoid the difficulties of an economy-wide cap-and-trade system.
It is not clear whether the bill has enough support yet to pass. Environmentalists have protested that the bill does not go far enough, and prominent Republicans have called for Kerry and Lieberman to postpone the bill’s introduction. Regardless, anyone concerned with our deteriorating environment will want to pay close attention to developments in this surprisingly low-profile story.
