July Exhibition: HEX YES! A Brief History of Hex Signs and its Many Forms 07/03/2009
TITLE: HEX YES! A Brief History of Hex Signs and its Many Forms
July 3 – August 2, 2009
“Whatever the real meaning of the hex sign is, we are left, in the end with the great Pennsylvania Dutch barns standing, awesome and decorated, in a landscape set against lush cornfields, rolling hills and blue mountain ridges. From the walls of these huge structures, the hex sign speaks to us and beckons us, as if by magic, in to the spirit of the place and into the heart of the people who painted them” – Don Yoder
Art in the Age is pleased to announce an exhibition celebrating the hex sign as a historical motif that has been adorned on everyday objects in early PA German households to the present day decorative symbols applied onto PA Dutch barns. Despite the ongoing historical debate on its true meaning and origin, the symbol as a way of simply expressing joyful decoration remains universal. Highlights of the exhibition include authentic Hex Sign related objects, courtesy of the Schwenkfelder Library and Heritage Center.
