QUESTION: How do you solve a problem like…a mouse…or two…or three who brazenly eat your bread and munch on your muffins?

ANSWER: Adopt a kitty…or two!

And that is precisely what I shall do! Two days ago, I visited the Lakes Region Humane Society in Ossipee, New Hampshire. They take the tired, the hungry, the huddled masses of abandoned, abused, unwanted cats and dogs in the Lakes Region and nurse them back to health, with the hope that they will all go to great homes.

Six pages of application papers and two phone calls to my “cat references” later, I was approved to be a cat-mom! In I went to THE KITTEN ROOM where at least twenty kittens were squeaking and sleeping and romping. A tiny (no more than 5 inches) orange male kitten climbed into my purse and fell asleep. I fell in love, told the staff that I was taking this one…and they all began to knowingly grin and chuckle.

“He’s got a sister. And it’s a two-for-one deal.”

His sister, a gray and white medium-haired kitten, was even TINIER. She was sleeping, squished underneath all of the bigger kittens. I peeled the other kittens off, and a tiny gray puffball began squeaking. I picked her up and she, too, immediately fell asleep in the palm of my hand.

They are just barely 5 weeks old now, and can’t come home to The Farm until August 18th. Their pregnant mother was left on the steps of the shelter. These two were what could be saved of her litter. There was no way in hell I had the heart to separate them.

So I’ve got three weeks and counting to make my house into a home for two baby animals…

As I was leaving, the receptionist at the shelter stopped me and said, “Ever since they were born here, I kept saying how much I wanted to see those two go to a nice home…together. And geez, I’m so glad it’s YOU!”
