There are many legends about Saint Valentine that have been passed down over hundreds of years. There have actually been three different Saint Valentines recognized by the Catholic Church, all of whom were martyred.
One legend tells of Saint Valentine during the third century, who sent the first love letter while imprisoned in Rome. There are many theories on the reason for his imprisonment, the most romantic being that he continued to perform marriages after the Emperor Claudius had banned marriage for young men. Claudius believed that men made better soldiers when they had no wife or children to care for. Valentine found this unjust and continued to marry young young lovers in secrecy. When this was discovered by the Emperor, Valentine was ordered to death.
While in prison Valentine fell in love with the jailor’s daughter, who visited him frequently while in confinement. On the last day before he was put to death, he wrote her a letter, signed “From your Valentine“.
This is phrase is still used today when you want to let someone know just how much you love them.
