An Excuse to Drink – April 26, 1865: The Death of John Wilkes Booth & The “John Wilkes Booth” Cocktail

On this date in 1865, John Wilkes Booth, assassin of U.S. President Abraham Lincoln, is shot dead near Bowling Green Virginia. He was 27. Booth, an American stage actor was born May 10, 1838 in Bel Air, MD and was part of the famous Booth Theatrical family. A Confederate sympathizer outraged at the defeat of the South, Booth assassinated Lincoln on April 14. Injuring his ankle during his escape, Booth was able to flee on horseback to southern Maryland, and made his way to a farm in rural northern Virginia, where he was tracked down by federal forces and shot.

* 1/4 part Root liqueur
* 1/2 part Bourbon or Blended Scotch
* 3 crushed cinnamon sticks
* 1 cube brown sugar
* Orange wedge

Glass: Double Rocks

Garnish: Orange Twist

Muddle until sugar is dissolved, almost to a paste. Add ice. Add Bourbon/Scotch. Shake and then double strain into a double rocks glass over ice.
