Tyler Scaife at Art in the Age

This February, Philadelphia’s Art in The Age will present new photographs by Tyler Scaife.
Over the past year, photographer Tyler Scaife has been creating a series of images of abandoned elementary and middle schools throughout the Philadelphia area. Many of these schools have been unused for decades, slowly deteriorating behind barred steel doors and boarded-up windows. Although subject to vandalism and exposure to the elements, the schools still exhibit their former grandeur through classic architecture and craftsmanship no longer seen in contemporary building. Focusing on Julia de Burgos School in North Philadelphia, which was built in 1903 as the Northeast Manual Training School; Tyler will be exhibiting mixed media photographic works, as well as ephemera gathered during his research and exploration of this once grand institution.
The work will debut on February 4, 2011 and remain up for the remainder of the month.
