Eats beat
March 17, 2011

_ Philadelphia is the sandwich capital of the country. How so? Because the April issue of Saveur magazine declares it thus.
The issue, on newsstands next week, celebrates sandwiches and says “there’s no better place for lunch on a roll.” Proving its point, the magazine highlights the tuna hoagie at Greenman’s Delicatessen; roast beef, pulled pork and roast pork sandwiches from DiNic’s; the Schmitter at McNally’s Tavern, and chicken cheesesteaks from Johnny’s Hots.
_ The South Jersey Independent Restaurant Association (better known as the SJ HOT Chefs) will host its biannual South Jersey Restaurant Week Sunday through March 25. More than 40 independently-owned restaurants are participating, offering $35 and occasionally $25 four-course dinners. For more information and a list of participating restaurants, go to www.SJHOTchefs.com.

_ Art in the Age has partnered with Di Bruno Bros. specialty stores on a limited-edition ROOT liquor-washed Winnimere cheese.
The semisoft, cow’s-milk cheese produced by Vermont’s Jasper Hill Farm will be sold exclusively at Di Bruno Bros. stores for $29.99 a pound. Grab a free sample from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. April 9 at the Ardmore Farmer’s Market in Suburban Square (Anderson and Coulter avenues, Ardmore).
_ Vegan Fest, “a celebration of all things vegan,” will be held from noon-4 p.m. Sunday at Weavers Way Co-op (559 Carpenter Lane, 215-843-2350).
There will be vegan products from the Weavers Way food department and from Bhagya’s Kitchen, Jyoti, Moshe’s, Fresh Tofu and Helen’s Pure Foods. Plus live music, demos and a registered dietitian and licensed nutritionist to answer questions about the vegan diet.
