The Public Library of Cincinnati has just revealed “The Cincinnati Panorama“, one of the finest examples of North American city-scapes from photography’s earliest decades.   Photographed by Charles Fontayne and William S. Porter on a Sunday in September 1848, the recently restored daguerreotype shows two miles of the Cincinnati waterfront in such fine detail that even building signs can be read clearly.

The library has also released a zoomable digital version, which allows users to magnify the image up to 32 times, revealing details never before easily seen, even by the photographers!
