INTERVIEW: The Balancing Act of The Illustrious and Industrious Matt Neff

If you are not yet aware of a Philadelphia-based printmaker/painter/professor extraordinaire by the name of Matt Neff, allow me to introduce you. His work in silkscreening and letterpress is arresting - simultaneously thought-provoking and humorous in spirit. His personal energy appears boundless (How else could one manage a printshop and teach silkscreening, intaglio, relief, and letterpress to throngs of clutter-prone collegiates?). And his crazy journey from painting in Indiana to professorship at The University of Pennsylvania is undoubtedly worth retelling. So without further ado...

Who are you and where do you come from?

My name is Matt Neff, and I come from Indiana.

How did you end up in Philadelphia?

I went to undergrad at Indiana University for a BFA in Painting and a BA in Art History. I married my wife, Allison, 3 weeks after I graduated. We met in class. I was married when I was 22!

Ahh! I'm 22!

Yeah! Can you imagine getting married!? We were crazy, so we just packed up a truck and moved here on a whim. I'd never been here before. We talked a landlord into renting to us since we had no credit, and I started finding random jobs.

What are some of the more ridiculous jobs you've held?

I used to work at The Book Trader, shelving books for 12 hours a day, which was actually sort of cool. I read a lot. Although I didn't make much money, every week I got free books!

After a year, I applied to grad school at Penn and Tyler. I got into Penn and started school again.

How did you segway into teaching?

Basically right as I was graduating, they asked me to start teaching.

A towering metal rack housed prints of various sizes, suspended or interwoven. Swainston's work is especially notable for his bold use of color and tightness of over-printing techniques.

The results ranged from elegantly hand lettered frames to a bike rack-turned-silkscreen-shop! All works are available for purchase, with proceeds benefiting Neighborhood Bike Works of Philadelphia.

The two floors of two-wheeled creations in the gritty, dim Media Bureau warehouse exhibition space were packed full of visitors and friends with tunes cranking and beer flowing, even as I rolled in after 10 pm. This is a really good reason to make a trip/walk/ride out to 725 North 4th Street. A really honest and lighthearted show for a good cause.

There are many wheeled creations not pictured here, but they were all worthy and all quite unique. Visit Art In The Age Flickr! for the full rundown.

First Friday Recap PART 1: "One Long Funeral Song" at Space 1026

The evening began with a romp through the mystical excess of Space 1026's show "One Long Funeral Song" of a gallery-wide collaborative installation by Monica Canilao and Kyle Ranson. This piece proved to be one of the more all-encompassing shows at 1026 as of late in all of its thick, decorative, wall-covering glory. Floating somewhere between craftiness and its self-proclaimed mythological narrative, this showing could easily do a lot more through grander excess on an even larger scale, or a lot less by parsing its constituent pieces into individual memorials of a sort. It was not so much the arrangement of found objects that made the piece cohesive, but the color palette and paint treatment of the wooden figures and constructed foliage and tee-pee-like structures. Noted: A painted casket with a folkloric Freudian figure within? This was a source of narrative intrigue.

Art in the Age is a Digphilly Pick!

We bring art to the masses! Art in the Age of Mechanical Reproduction is one of Digphilly's picks for just this reason. Take a look at the entire articled on the Digphilly site!

---

"Digphilly Pick: Art in the Age of Mechanical Reproduction

By Emily

For many art fans, the idea of actually owning a work by their favorite artist is out of the question for obvious financial reasons. That?s where Art in the Age of Mechanical Reproduction comes in.

For the past few years, Art in the Age of Mechanical Reproduction has been seeking out emerging contemporary artists and printing their work in low-cost, wearable multiples: T-shirts, sweatshirts, tote bags and more. The result is two-fold?greater public exposure for the artists and a way for art appreciators to access that work affordably.

It?s a simpatico relationship for all parties involved. Individual artists provide Art in the Age with limited rights to use his/her image, be it painterly landscapes or hyper comic book-style drawings. Art in the Age then works closely with each artist, carefully adapting the image for the printing process.

Prints from Paper Rad, Lori Damiano, and Seripop, as well as Philly art faves Andrew Jeffrey Wright, Thom Lessner, and Ben Woodward, have found their way onto Art in the Age?s roster. Art in the Age also recently began teaming up with bands to produce limited edition t-shirts and tour posters. Times New Viking and No Age are their first band collabos, with more to come.

With an inventory constantly shifting to make way for new collaborations, it?s best to grab whatever floats your boat before it?s gone. For updates on artist collaborations, profiles, and related blog posts, check out www.artintheage.com.

Art in the Age goods can be found online at www.artintheage.com or at the following Philadelphia retail shops:

Vagabond Boutique

37 N 3rd St

Philadelphia, PA 19106

(267) 671-0737

Sailor Jerry

116-118 S. 13th Street

Philadelphia, PA 19107

(215) 531-6380"

Handmade Nation: A Documentary About The Rise of DIY Art, Craft & Design

Wisconsion-based independent film-maker Faythe Levine visited 15 cities and gathered over 80 hours of footage that both illustrates and celebrates the new wave of young, DIY craftspeople in America. From San Francisco stitchers to Brooklyn zine-makers, Levine delves into this generation (our generation! rah-rah!) of creatives who have grown up truly valuing the hand-made aesthetic and art-making for love of the craft.

The documentary, Handmade Nation: The Rise of DIY Art, Craft & Design, is due out in 2009. It is currently in post production.

In the meantime, check out the trailer...

And more good news: This Saturday from 6-10 pm, POKETO will host a silent art auction benefit for the documentary. The evening will include a 20 minute sneak peek!

And if you?re a fan of the blog then you?re in a little secret society of music lovers that rally around your big-teethed mascot and nod at each other whenever you spot someone wearing the tee.

Costiness=$28"

At first glance, this tiny tome appears to be a "quick read." The pocket-size collection of short rants spilling forth from art critic Hal Foster took me four months to digest.

From searing analyses of Rem Koolhaas' evolving theory of public architecture to a blow-by-blow of the meltdown of the modernist ARTFORUM crew of writers and editors, Foster maintains incisiveness and acuity through fits of near-dizzying diction, and of course, an occasional stunning/bewildering visual (see below).

THE HIPPIES ARE BACK & THEY'RE PUNKS: Times New Viking Interview, Review, & Photos

Last night I was more than honored and excited to interview Times New Viking, the most recent addition to our roster of artists, bringing us an awesome new shirt design and limited edition silk-screen print! Currently on Matador Records, their latest and third album, Rip It Off, was released early this year.

After their set at Johnny Brenda's, singer/keyboardist Beth Murphy sipped a Yards Philly Pale Ale, (Her Verdict: Much better than PBR, their staple back in Columbus) and talked with me about wanting to see something honest, something sincere written about the band besides just the catch-phrase, "lo fi."

Hopefully this review and interview will do justice to the unique vibrations and fun personalities behind Times New Viking...

NYC Exhibition Review: Jimmy Joe Roche & Matthew McGuinness at RARE Gallery

Currently, an array of noteworthy pieces are gracing the walls of RARE Gallery in Chelsea. I made it to the gallery in one piece late Sunday afternoon after trekking northward from Philly, walking through a series of fierce sun-showers (yes, FIERCE), and getting waylaid by the traffic-halting Gay Pride Parade through Madison Square Garden.

The Verdict? Worth all of the adventures and mishaps en route.

They've only cranked out 125 of the hot pink-and-gray tees, which are available starting today while they're in town for a show at Johnny Brenda's. If we weren't undeniably wary of hippies, punks and all that is associated with their clothing, we'd be fighting you for one.

Philebrity Phasionista Reviews the New Tees from AITA

Take a look at the entire review below!

Phashionista: T-shirts Are Back & They?re Awesome

Hometown t-shirt makers, Art in the Age of Mechanical Reproduction, have teamed up the lo-fi rock band Times New Viking for its latest venture. Since their 2006 inception, the folks at AAMR have been working with a smattering of local artists to create shirt designs that feature subversive messages. This one proclaims that ?THE HIPPIES ARE BACK & THEY?RE PUNKS!? We?re not really sure what it means and if it?s even true, but we like that they use words that sound countercultural. The shirt will come out just in time for the band?s upcoming stint at Johnny Brenda?s on June 26th. [Papermag.com]

Are you a vampy gladiator? Yeah? Well, we have just the shoe for you. [Jkarma]

And, if you feel like splurging to reward yourself for making it through a tough week, may we suggest heading over to Lisa M. Reisman Exclusives to stock on some baubles.

As I?ve mentioned before this week, I?m a bit pushed for time writing posts, so I?m going to hand you over to the rather eloquent folks at AITA to do the job for me.

Art In The Age Creative Director Ben Woodward gives a shout out to Philly?s music blog with really big teeth, The Walrus.( http://www.walrusmusicblog.com) The big, music loving personality of this oversized and lovable friend of the sea is expressed perfectly in Ben?s larger-than-life illustration. Turquoise-on-Turquoise?

The tees will be available in men?s sizes Small-Large for $28 and will be released tomorrow [oh, sorry, guess I probably should have posted this yesterday?]. Art in the Age will also be giving away 3 tees to 3 lucky winners in the next 3 weeks!

I?d usually think that grey on grey is the blandest colourway possible, but its actually pretty cool in this case.

ARTIST OF THE MONTH INTERVIEW: Alex Lukas

This month, Art In The Age features Alex Lukas, a Massachusetts-born, Philadelphia-immigrated artist. Lukas is quite the prolific printmaker/painter. Not to mention, a 'zine "publisher" extraordinaire! Get the details, courtesy of Ben Woodward...

Ben Woodward: Who are you and where do you come from?

Alex Lukas: I'm Alex Lukas. I'm from Cambridge, Massachusetts. After living in a few other cities over a few years, I moved here to Philadelphia mostly because a space opened up at 1026 and my buddy Will invited me to fill it.

Tell me a little about the "New" England now that you live in Philadelphia. What is the hardest thing to get used to?

Well, I have only been here since October, so I haven't experienced the Philadelphia summers yet, and so far I'm not too happy about the humidity. We get it bad back in Boston too, and every summer I forget how much I hate it, but this year I get to blame it on how far south Philadelphia is. But somewhat more seriously, people in Cambridge, Boston, and New England as a whole take a great deal of pride in being "a local." If you're not from there, you never really will be, or it takes a good 15 years to feel like you know the place and belong. I get the sense that Philadelphia is similar, it is a "locals town." Only I'm not from here, and I'm still very conscious of that.

Philly Exhibition Review: Sendak on Sendak - Peeking Beyond Where The Wild Things Are

I recently had the great honor and pleasure of attending a Maurice Sendak retrospective show at the historic Rosenbach Museum & Library in Philadelphia's Fitler Square neighborhood.

Previous to my visit, I was only really aware of Sendak via Where The Wild Things Are, his most famous children's story. Please excuse my tacky diction, but Sendak on Sendak: There's A Mystery There was really an "experience." Each of the four gallery spaces covered a different aspect of Sendak's life and who he was as an artist and concerned citizen of the world: Kids - Innocence and Experience, Beasts of Burden, Influences, and Into The Forest (settings).

ART & MUSIC: Radiohead Fan Has 'Big Ideas' About Old Technology

One of the most interesting tracks we've seen come out of Radiohead's Remix Contest is this video by electronic musician (and obvious technology fetishist) James Houston:

Though it takes a while to build, he ends up with a really interesting take on the remix. Instead of dropping the files straight into Garage Band and throwing some tinny loops over them, Houston reconstructs each track with bits of antiquated technology, resulting in a video equally reminiscent of the Fischli/Weiss extraordinary machine The Way Things Go and the halcyon days of the Nintendo Entertainment System.

Particularly inspired is the use of an array of old hard drives to reproduce Thom Yorke's silky voice and Little Mermaid-esque croon.

And in case you haven't seen it, make sure you check out the slo-mo-fest that is Radiohead's official video for Nude (Scotch Mist Version).

---

A Special Thank You to A.
The Philly Challenge: This Weekend in Art & Local Music

It's summertime, and Philly livin' is easy. Which means that it's high time for me to get out in the fresh air! This weekend, beginning with First Friday Gallery Openings, I'm challenging myself to make it out to every art opening/festival and local music jam that I have been "penciling in" and promising myself (and others!) to attend. Here is a proposed schedule of art/music haps:

And The Award for Best Hand-Made Musical Press Kit Goes To... Mt. St. Helens Vietnam Band!

This week I find myself falling in love with many material goods. This statement sounds awfully trite, but the designer/artmaker part of my brain will never cease to be enthralled with tactility and objecthood. And never more so than when I first held in my wee hands, the press kit for a new Seattle-based band...

So I would now like to unabashedly declare my love for Mt. St. Helens Vietnam Band, and award them the prize for Best Hand-Made Musical Press Kit. They are a complete package, the whole shebang! The Five Member troupe is comprised of a married couple, a 13-year-old boy, and two assorted bearded men. Here is a further breakdown:

THE GOODS: A promo copy of the band's first release, Weepy EP, with what appears to be a neon spray-paint gradient, was housed in a hand-stitched pouch of brightly colored felt. The package included glitter stickers of snack foods, a handful of toy soldiers, and a lovely band poster. Textiles and toys are the way to my heart!

Bill McRight Profile in JUXTAPOZ

Check out the profile for AITA tee designer Bill McRight in the June issue of JUXTAPOZ!

---

Linoleum block printing out. Out of style, out of date, and to do it you have to be a little out of your mind. But as with many antiquated artistic techniques, there are a few practitioners holding it down and moving it forward. Bill McRight is one of those few who will take the chisel over the mouse any day, putting in hours to carve a block where others are quick to click "Import to Illustrator." "The level of craft that goes into creating a block and printing it is really appealing," McRight says. "There is a tradition behind it, even if it is a dying one." Publishing his prints through such shops as Cannonball Press in Brooklyn, Evil Prints in St Louis, and working for Saturday skateboards, McRight is currently a member of Space 1026 in Philadelphia but headed west to St Louis soon, where he is sure to unveil a thing or two to the Show Me state. - Alex Lukas

Here: let me help you in your gandering pursuits with this digital reproduction of an image from their site!

Now, I?ve got to be honest with you here about something: If you click on that image and go to the shirt page on Art in the Age?s site, you will find that the man wearing that t-shirt does not look particularly excited about it. In fact, he looks a little depressed. I might go so far as to say that he is glowering.

Perhaps he is just tired after a full day?s work of slaving
