This past fall, Philadelphia voters ushered in an amendment to the Philadelphia Home Rule Charter. This addition dissolved the independently operated Fairmount Park Commission, and provided for a new Department of Parks and Recreation, advised by a citizens commission. This 15-member Commission of Parks and Recreation will form on July 1 of this year. The commission will establish guidelines for land use and appropriation. Members will serve in an advisory capacity to City Council.

Why is this exciting? Why should you care?…

The commission will be chosen from an open call for applications! The new open selection process marks a first for the City of Philadelphia. Do you know someone who should be sitting on this panel? Fund-raisers, marketing gurus, environmentalists, landscape architects…the list could go on forever! Be heard! Have a say in who creates policy for one of Philadelphia’s greatest natural treasures.

Direct him/her/yourself to the Fairmount Park Website for more information and to download an application.
