If you ever find yourself in Scranton, Pennsylvania,  be sure to set aside some time for the Lackawanna Coal Mine Tour.

Descend 300 feet beneath the surface of the earth in a mine car, down old Slope #190, an anthracite mine originally opened in 1860.

Accompany a miner tour guide through the winding underground gangways and rock tunnels of this restored mine, and learn about the fascinating methods used, and the heroic efforts involved, in deep mining history.

It’s amazing to see first hand where and how men and boys worked to heat a nation, and fuel the conversion of our nation’s economy from agriculture to industry.

It’s also not hard to imagine these miners enjoying a drink after a grueling day’s work.  If you can’t make it to the Lackawanna Coal Mine,  mix yourself a ROOT Coal Cracker Buck for a refreshing taste of coal country.
