More details…
The TAMWORTH LYCEUM is the latest project of Steven Grasse, founder of Art in the Age. The TAMWORTH LYCEUM is a lecture space, letterpress studio, and rustic mercantile, offering dry goods, light grocery, and beverage service.
Lyceums were started in Greece by Aristotle, who lectured in gardens and public buildings. In the 1800s, Lyceums for the improvement of adult communities gained popularity in the United States, starting in Massachusetts. Local and out-of-town lecturers would come to a public space to give a program in science, politics, the arts, agriculture, or practical skills. All were welcome.
Our space is a modern New England Lyceum, committed to the revival of Transcendentalist thought. We host lectures, art exhibitions, workshops, and social events covering a varied array of topics, both practical and philosophical, and provide a nexus for community-building practices and discussion of ideas.
The TAMWORTH LYCEUM INTERNSHIP PROGRAM will grant three undergraduate arts & humanities majors the opportunity to gain firsthand knowledge of operations, while exploring self-directed creative projects in their respective fields of study. Interns will live and work in the Lyceum, located on Tamworth’s Main Street.
