The Making of The ABRAHAM LINCOLN QUILT: Part I
Norma Grasse, a “Quiltie Lady” from the Variable Star Quilters group of PA, is hard at work on an extremely special project for Art In The Age…
An Abraham Lincoln Quilt for his 200th birthday! The quilt will be made from a motley and beautiful selection of fabrics and will feature the iconic log cabin in the center.
The Variable Star Quilters began in 1977 with a small group of women who met at a quilting class. They met (and have continued to meet) each month in a different member’s home to talk about their own quilting projects, offer support to others, and work on collaborative projects! Their quilts are exhibited in shows, with proceeds benefitting local charities.
Mrs. Grasse is also the woman behind the quilts we offer. She explained to me the amount of work that goes into each quilt. Not only are the traditional patterns difficult to construct, but each quilt is actually made by two women, the designer (sews the pieces together for the top) and the quilter (sews the top design to the bottom piece with batting between). In this way, no two quilts will ever be alike.
This is a first of a short photo documentation of The Making of The Abe Lincoln Log Cabin Quilt…
