The Pennsylvania Horticultural Society "Pop Up Garden"
As part of a revolution to reclaim the city’s abandoned lots from landlords seemingly paralyzed by the economy, The Pennsylvania Horticultural Society (PHS) has taken over a lot on the corner of 20th and Market Street in Philadelphia. The lot is surrounded by sky scrapers and is obviously zoned for the same land use, but has been sitting vacant for the past ten years since the Penn Center Inn was demolished.
The Pennsylvania Horticultural Society has taken over the abandoned lot and is installing a “Pop Up” Garden. As of right now, the garden is intended to be open through October. The sudden transformations on the urban landscapes demonstrate the organization’s year-round work in design, horticulture, sustainability, and building healthy communities. Most of the materials used to construct the garden were donated, and built by volunteers, students and by PHS employees.
In addition, PHS gardeners will conduct free garden walks every Wednesday and Thursday, from 12 noon to 2 p.m. We strongly recommend showing your support, and taking a tour of this beautiful oasis at 20th and Market Street.
