VIDEO: Haying At The Farm!
One of the coolest things about the summer (not literally) is the hay season. For years, a local farmer has planted, fertilized, and harvested 3 hay fields on the property in exchange for keeping the hay for his Belgian horse farm. To me, that’s what a cooperative local economy is all about. Very refreshing.
Last week, during the first hot, dry afternoon, Farmer Doug came by to say hello and begin the haying. He brought with him an arsenal of helpers, tractors, balers, cutters, and numerous other machines that appeared to be Death’s Scythe on steroids.
The actual haying process, though, took place over the course of 3 days and involved a day of cutting, a day of drying, and a day of baling. I recorded video footage from all three days, and made a little “Tamworth Haying Vignette.” The background music is a track called “Dry River” by local guitarist Mike Rayburn.
