Warship's Fate Up For Discussion
The Olympia lives to fight another day.
The last warship of the Spanish-American War received a temporary stay of execution by the Independence Seaport Museum, who announced this week that they would fund interim repairs to the 212-year-old ship.
The Olympia was slated to be sunk off the coast of Cape May and become an artificial coral reef, a common fate for decommissioned vessels. While this outcome is still in the cards, a summit planned for next year by the museum will bring together officials from historical societies, maritime museums, government, economic development, and tourism to discuss The Olympia‘s future.
