Woolley Hat Weekend
This past Monday marked the start of Woolley Hat Week, which means you have two more days to take part in this head-warming tradition. Woolley hat week began as a way to show support and raise funds for the Sailor’s Society, a group that offers welfare support for merchant seafarers on board ship and in port.
Aside from participating to raise money for a good cause, we thought we’d give you a few other great reasons to wear a woolley hat – and not just for this weekend!
- Human Heat. A serious amount of human heat can be lost if your head is without a hat. Between 10-50% in fact. Just think how much lower your energy bills could be at home if you just popped on a hat and how much more warmer you’d be.
- Woolley hats are a timeless trend. The oldest hat in the world is over 27,000 years old so you can be sure that they won’t be going out of fashion anytime soon. If you’re bored of the woolley hat you’ve got then swap it for a different one.
- Wearing a hat can add extra hours to your day. You don’t have to spend time in front of a mirror – just cover your bed head with a hat and hope that you don’t have to take it off at all.
- Hats make an excellent project (and gift). There are very many patterns available for free online to help get you started as well as online tutorials. We even had a workshop at Art in the Age demonstrating how to crochet with recycled wool.
So wear a woolley hat this weekend, to show your support to the Sailor’s Society and also to embrace all that hats have to offer.
